Google has confirmed that it will launch its Page Experience Update in May 2021. For those that have been paying attention, this means we have another 6 months to prepare.
What is page experience?
In order to rank a web page, Google looks at many things. Page experience is all about Google’s define ‘signals’ which include how quickly a page loads, whether it’s mobile-friendly, runs on HTTPS and whether content jumps around as the page loads. Google has also refined its Core Web Vitals – speed and usability.
Visual indicators of user experience
Google has previously used visual indicators before which included AMP icons, slow labels and mobile-friendly labels. But when the Page Experience update launches, Google will test how to display visual indicators in the search results so the searcher can immediately see if a chosen search results is likely to have a great experience.
“We believe that providing information about the quality of a web page’s experience can be helpful to users in choosing the search result that they want to visit,” Google writes. And whilst the snippet or image preview gives an insight into the relevance and the information a page provides, they are working on visual indicators that “…identifies pages that have met all of the page experience criteria.”
